Jeff was born in Santa Monica, California. By the age of 2 he began fishing with his father, be it fishing local beaches or mountain streams he was always right at home on the water. As he grew older the fascination of larger quarry enticed him. Skiff rentals from the local piers in Santa Monica and Paradise Cove always produced new and exciting adventures along with checking out the tides and stalking local beaches with his friends in search of large corbina, surfperch and croaker. Jeff worked on local boats as a deck hand and built custom rods at the local sporting goods store. As time went on, he was introduced into fly-fishing, which in his opinion is the higher form of fishing. He practiced day in and day out to improve his casting skills. Trying his hand at local streams and lakes in the Sierras and watching in fascination as fish danced at the end of his line, he “truly” was hooked.
Again going back to his old fishing grounds in Santa Monica Bay and testing his skills on in-shore species, Jeff has caught and landed numerous world record size fish. He was introduced into blue water fly fishing in Baja and since has returned year after year to challenge himself on the diverse bounty of those waters. Jeff was fortunate to have met, what he feel are some of the most influential people in fly-fishing. George “Chappy” Chapman is definitely one to mention along with Alan Roher from the board of governors of the FFF who, with Joe LaBeau and Tim Rajeff, assisted him in the certification program as a casting instructor. Jeff has also been fortunate enough to work along side Mel Krieger at one of his Southern California casting clinics. Gary Bulla has contributed greatly in expanding his knowledge of blue water fly-fishing and local guiding, for all these things he is truly grateful. Numerous other individuals have assisted in his continuous search for knowledge as a fly tier, instructor and guide. He has taught fly tying at different clubs and tied on theater at the Fred Hall show for numerous years. Jeff’s patterns have accounted for numerous world record size fish and have been featured in Fly Fishing in Salt Waters magazine. He has also lead the Sierra Pacific Fly Fishers with their yearly casting symposium, open to all newcomers to the sport. With his love for all aspects of fly-fishing Jeff hope to share this with those he comes in contact with. Whether it is in tying classes, casting lessons or guided surf fishing.
